“Today should not pass without a mention, that 10 years ago was the bottom of the Australian Equity Market, it was a bear market that was brought on by the Global Financial Crisis,” said Mr. Lloyd Hirst, Chief Investment Officer of Menninger Capital.
The market closed on 6 March 2009 with the ‘All Ordinaries’ at 3,111.7 and the ‘All Ordinaries Accumulation Index’ at 20,736.9.
“I do not recall anyone ringing a bell,” says Mr. Hirst.
The Australian market closed today, 6 March 2019, ‘All Ordinaries Index’ at 6,326.8 and ‘All Ordinaries Accumulation Index’ at 64,702.1, both indices delivering an unimpressive 7.4% and 12.0% per annum return respectively.
“These returns are ‘pedestrian’, considering the low base they’ve come from, and they are not significantly higher than the long run returns for each index of 6.7% and 11.2% respectively.”
